Dr. Bernhard began his research career at Harvard University, where as an undergraduate he completed a double major magna cum laude thesis on the micro and macro impacts of the Las Vegas-based casino gaming industry. The foundations of this analysis have since been extended worldwide, and by the age of 30, Dr. Bernhard had lectured on this topic on six continents.

In 2002, Dr. Bernhard was named the inaugural Research Director at UNLV’s International Gaming Institute, and he was also awarded the first fully dual professorship (hotel management and sociology) in the history of the university. In these roles, he has delivered over 200 presentations to regulatory, industry, and policy leaders from every corner of the globe. He has also overseen nearly $1 million in grant-funded research projects, on subjects ranging from responsible gaming to casino technologies to the evolving internet gaming industry. In 2007, his focus on globalization earned him the World Affairs Council’s International Educator of the Year award, and in 2008, he was given both the UNLV Hotel College’s Boyd Distinguished Professorship for Research (awarded to the college’s top researcher) and the Spanos Award (awarded to the best teacher in the entire university).
